I have mentioned WIPAN (Women In Prison Advocacy Network) before — I mentor through them and have thoroughly enjoyed my time in the program. They have another volunteer mentor intake soon:

‘Applications close 17 January 2011

  • City/Inner West/Blacktown or Penrith

The Project:
The project aims to provide an opportunity to build a sense of belonging to the local community for women who have exited custody. This is achieved by linking female volunteer community mentors with women who have a history with the criminal justice system. Female mentors are recruited so as to provide gender-appropriate social support to women who may have experienced child and/or adult sexual assault and domestic violence. A sense of belonging and connectedness can be developed from a range of activities such as:

  • Provide social support to women to assist their transition back into the community
  • Assist to increase knowledge of services in the local area
  • Enhance knowledge of and access to recreational activities such as; sport, arts and leisure in the local area
  • Most importantly, the availability and commitment of mentors on a voluntary basis to develop a sustainable relationship with a mentee WIPAN provides ongoing social support for women exiting prison to assist with reintegration and in order to increase the women’s involvement in the local community’
